What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280×720 (16:9) is the minimum recommended size. Keep critical text and faces inside the central 1100×620 area - YouTube overlays the video duration in the bottom-right and the thumbnail can render as small as 116×65 on mobile.
What size should my YouTube channel banner be?
Upload at 2560×1440 (16:9). Mobile devices only show the central 1546×423 strip, so all logos and text should sit inside that safe zone.
Will the cropper handle a 4K source image?
Yes. The cropper accepts any size up to 20 MB. Output is always rendered at the exact preset dimensions (e.g. 1280×720), so YouTube will not need to resize it again.
Should I export my thumbnail as PNG or JPG?
JPG at 85-90% quality keeps the file under 2 MB while staying sharp. PNG is better for thumbnails with crisp text overlays where compression artefacts would be visible.
Is my image uploaded anywhere when I crop?
No. The cropper is fully client-side using the Canvas API. Verify in DevTools - there are zero network requests during upload, crop, and download.
